Can Metformin cause Breast Cancer?

Metformin Recall

The commonly prescribed Type 2 diabetes drug metformin was recalled on May 28, 2020, by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This action was taken due to testing that showed high levels of the carcinogen N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA).

All metformin hydrochloride-containing drugs are being removed from the market including brand names:

  • Riomet
  • Glumetza
  • Fortamet
  • And Glucophage XR

Does Metformin Cause Cancer?

Testing revealed significantly increased amounts of NDMA in samples of metformin, with several batches containing more than 10 times the FDA allowable limit. NDMA was formerly used in the production of plastics and rocket fuel but is no longer produced or commercially available.

What Causes NDMA?

The only exception is NDMA’s use in lab research to induce tumor growth in test animals. Unacceptable NDMA levels were recently found in Zantac (ranitidine) drugs, which led to their recall.

FDA investigations revealed that NDMA can be formed due to incorrect:

  • Manufacturing
  • Packaging
  • Storing conditions
  • As well as the drug’s chemical structure

There has also been research demonstrating that it can be created in the body after ingested.

Some studies have reported that metformin can actually reduce breast cancer incidence in those with Type 2 diabetes, and additional trials are being performed to better understand that conclusion and to determine the degree of its validity. Though the medication itself may possibly reduce breast cancer risk, NDMA has a known negative impact.

In fact, one of the first lawsuits against Zantac for its NDMA contamination was filed by a man diagnosed with breast cancer. Many forms of breast cancer can be treatable, particularly when found early. It is important to test yourself often, and get mammograms when needed, especially if you may have been exposed to NDMA.
