The Paragard T 380A, produced by Teva Pharmaceuticals, is a common birth control device used across the country. A copper device, it is inserted into the uterus (“IUD” stands for “intrauterine device”). Sperm reacts to the copper. By staying away from the copper, the sperm avoids fertilizing the egg just beyond the device. As a non-hormonal birth control solution, the Paragard has become quite popular. Many women enjoy its effectiveness without hormonal side effects.
IUD Lawsuit
In 2016, a Nebraska woman was having her Paragard removed. During the process, the device broke, and a piece of it embedded into her uterus. After complications emerged, she had to go into surgery to have the rest of the device removed.
Since then, other women have expressed similar concerns, and a class action lawsuit was filed. The women’s claim is that the device was not appropriately labeled. Doctors were not on the lookout for breakages, so steps weren’t taken to avoid the problem. The women afflicted with the broken pieces reported several problems.
