Police and fire personnel were dispatched around 7:55 AM Tuesday, July 2nd, for the report of an accident with a vehicle fire. Upon arrival, crews found a transit van badly damaged and engulfed in flames. Three people died in the crash who have yet to be publicly identified.

Police have said that an initial investigation found that the van struck the rear of a vehicle that had been towing a dumpster. The Delaware County’s District Attorney’s Office is conducting the investigation into the fatal crash.

The Route 1 Bypass was closed between routes 252 and 352 for hours as crews cleared debris from the scene and officials conducted their investigation. There have yet to be any charges filed in the crash.
