The Dangers of Using Future Motion One Wheel Skateboards

Many people learned about the Future Motion Onewheel electric skateboards within the last decade and either purchased one for themselves or their children to ride. However, within the last couple of years, there have been more and more injuries and deaths reported due to these electric skateboards. As a result, customers were made aware of the dangers that came with using Future Motion Onewheel skateboards, and all models and units manufactured during a certain time period were recalled.

What are the dangers of using Future Motion Onewheel skateboards?

There are serious dangers associated with using Future Motion Onewheel skateboards. The first danger was reported in late 2022 by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). It came as a warning to customers and riders who purchased these electric skateboards as the CPSC wanted them to know that there is a risk of severe injuries as well as death when riding on this product. The CPSC looked over and tested several of the Future Motion electric skateboards and found that users can be quickly thrown from the skateboards, which could severely injure or even kill them.

Even though the CPSC informed Future Motion Inc. about this danger, the company argued that the electric one-wheel skateboards were safe, and that customers should not stop riding or buying their products. However, regardless of this, the CPSC alerted the public to stop using or buying all Future Motion Onewheel skateboards. At the time, this was just a warning.

Less than one year later, in September 2023, the CPSC and Future Motion Inc. recalled all models of the Future Motion Onewheel electric skateboards. The CPSC found more issues with the product after several injuries and deaths were reported. The alarming issue was that “the skateboards can stop balancing the rider if the boards’ limits are exceeded, posing a crash hazard that can result in serious injury or death.”

Some of the serious and life-threatening injuries that were reported from these recalled skateboards were traumatic brain injuries, soft tissue injuries, broken bones and fractures to the upper and lower body, paralysis, and more. At the time of the recall, at least four deaths had also been reported, which were mainly all due to head and brain trauma. Three of the four people killed while riding their Future Motion Onewheel electric skateboards were not wearing helmets when their accidents occurred.

As a result of these injuries and deaths, more than 300,000 products made and sold between January 2014 and September 2023 were recalled, which means that thousands of people have been impacted by this recall.

Is anything being done to help those who have had their Future Motion Onewheel electric skateboards recalled?

The CPSC suggested that all customers stop using their Future Motion Onewheel skateboards immediately. They should then either ask for a refund or have their skateboards repaired to include the update, which will add a new warning system. The warning system, called a Haptic Buzz warning system, will buzz loudly when there is an error, the battery is low, or the limits of the board are getting close. The CPSC urges those who own the Onewheel electric skateboards to not resell them as they are a risk to other people’s safety without the proper repairs.

How do I know if my Future Motion Onewheel skateboard was recalled?

Even though almost all models of the Future Motion Onewheel skateboards from 2014 to 2023 were recalled, there are certain model numbers you can look for to determine whether your skateboard is one of them. Here are the model numbers to keep an eye out for:

  • Onewheel
  • Onewheel +
  • Onwheel XR
  • Onewheel GT
  • Onewheel Pint
  • Onewheel Pint X

If you come across any of these model numbers, do not use, resell, buy, or even donate them. These products are a risk to the safety and well-being of others unless they are repaired and updated with the Haptic Buzz warning system.

Can I file a Future Motion Onewheel skateboard lawsuit?

If you were injured while riding a Future Motion Onewheel skateboard, you may be eligible to file a personal injury lawsuit against the company. This means that if you owned or borrowed a Future Motion electric skateboard and the device suddenly stopped, causing you to fall and become seriously injured, you may be able to file a claim. In addition, if your family member or loved one was riding the Future Motion skateboard and was paralyzed or killed due to the device failing to function properly, you most likely can file a personal injury or wrongful death suit on their behalf.
