Tire Blowout Leads to Truck Accident on NJ Turnpike

A tire blowout led to two tractor trailers crashing Wednesday morning on the New Jersey Turnpike in Mount Laurel, according to the New Jersey State Police.

State Police said after an initial investigation that a single tire blowout on one of the tractor trailers led the two trucks to crash near mile marker 39 on the southbound side of the Turnpike.

The truck that lost the tire crashed and a truck traveling near it struck the errant tire, lost control, and ran down an embankment. The driver of the truck that struck the lose tire suffered minor injuries.

Troopers are still investigating the crash and no further information is available.

The Dangers of a Tire Blowout

The most serious danger of a tire blowout is that it can lead to the vehicle losing control. That vehicle can then strike other vehicles, hit buildings, or crash into pedestrians.

Another danger of tire blowouts is that it can cause flying debris. When a tire blows off of a vehicle it can shoot into the air, hitting passing vehicles. If a wayward tire hits another vehicle it can crash through the windshield, causing serious injuries and even death.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that more than 75,000 accidents occur annually due to tire blowouts, killing an average of 400 people.
